The
band was formed in 1996 by members Jim Weeks, Wes Burton, and Dave Szczepaniak.
Jim and Dave had worked together for several years prior to that in various
line-ups. It wasn't until Little Big Wheel was formed that a true direction
settled in for the duo. Jim had introduced long time friend and writing
partner Wes Burton into the band and Dave dredged out a past band mate
Ed Scholz to round out the group on drums. The chemistry was instant and
powerful.
Little
big Wheel entered the studio with a fresh batch of songs that Jim and
Wes had written through there fifteen or so years of friendship. After
a year of studio work their first full length CD was released entitled
"Home". Working with Dan McLaughlin at Fort Apache studios in
Cambridge, MA the true spirit of the songs was captured. The band began
quickly receiving national and international recognition for their debut
release. The addition of banjo into the recording introduced a Country
Alternative sound into the mix. The root’s rock sound of the disc
caught on in several circles of Independent music.
The
band toured mostly in the Northeastern United States in support of the
release. Just as things began to take off for LBW a rocky relationship
between Wes and Jim became too big of a road block to overcome. It was
a classic love hate relationship and their musical chemistry would be
missed. Wes departed in 1999.
Moving
on Little Big Wheel took time off from performing live and set out to
find Wes's replacement and that came rather quickly with guitarist Ray
Rogacz. The band returned to the studio to work on a new recording. Ray,
Ed, and Dave had previously played together in several different bands
over the years. It was a natural chemistry that captured a batch of Jim’s
songs both new and old into some great live recordings. Unfortunately,
due mostly to financial reasons the band stumbled after the basic track
sessions. Over the next three or four years Jim and Dave slowly worked
on the recordings with David Minehan at Woolly Mammoth Studio in Boston,
Massachusetts. Working with David who several years earlier retired from
the band scene himself was just what the doctor ordered to complete this
recording. Due to the lack of activity Ray slipped out for a bit and David
Minehan picked up most of the guitar responsibilities in the interim.
David a true pro with many years under his belt touring the world with
[his band] The Neighborhoods, Paul Westerburg, and Aerosmith, offered
a refreshing new direction and sound. Working slowly and surely the new
recordings were turning into something very special. Additional musicians
where brought in. Dave Dick on banjo and mandolin, Dan McLaughlin of The
Push Stars again sat in on keyboards, and even horns were introduced.
In
2003 things began to get serious again for the band. Ray Rogacz was back
rehearsing with the group and LBW was determined to finish the CD. Several
new songs were recorded with Ray again contributing on guitar. Final mixing
occurred in late 2004 and the full length CD "Redwood" was finally
completed. Holding true to its roots Little Big Wheel captured another
versatile release. "Redwood" displays the very talented songwriting
and raw emotional power of lead vocalist Jim Weeks.
